What is a Drilling Machine

Drilling machines or drill presses are one of the most common machines found in a machine shop. A drill press is a machine that rotates and advances a drill into a workpiece. While a drill press is primarily used for drilling holes, it can be used for a variety of machining operations when used with appropriate tools. Some of the most common machining operations performed on a drill press include drilling, reaming, tapping, countersinking, counterboring, and spot facing. There are many different types or configurations of drilling machines, but most drilling machines fall into four broad categories: sensitive upright, upright, radial, and special purpose. This type of drill press is used when sequential operations are to be carried out. For example, the first head can be used for spot facing with a drill. The second head can be used for drilling. The third head can be used with a guide pull head for tapping the hole. The fourth head can be used for chamfering.
