What is a Chain Hoist

When considering the weight a tool like this can lift, it is a rather simple device. It is made of durable, high-quality steel to ensure safety and reliability when lifting heavy loads, such as several tons. It can be divided into three different part categories: lifting chains, lifting mechanism, and hooks. A chain hoist has two chain loops - hand chain and lifting chain. The hand chain sits on a wheel in the lifting mechanism and needs to be pulled by hand to lift a load. The wheel inside the lifting mechanism has special pockets that allow the wheel of the hand chain to move. The lifting chain also loops through the lifting mechanism and lifts or lowers a load.

At the end of the chain, there is a holding hook where lifting chains or straps, a load arm, or the load itself can be attached. Chain hoists also have a hook at the top of their housing. This hook is used to attach the hoist to a ceiling mount, a tram system, or other structures capable of supporting the weight the hoist will lift. Most chain hoists have rotating hooks that can rotate 360 degrees for easier installation. The lifting mechanism consists of gears, an axle, gearwheels, and pinions. In addition, most lifting devices have a chain stopper or brake that prevents the load from falling under a load.

How Does a Chain Hoist Work

The physics behind it is very simple and has been used for a long time to lift heavy objects. It uses a mechanical advantage to convert a small force over a long distance to a large force over a short distance. This is achieved by using multiple larger and smaller gears in the machine's mechanism. To lift a load, the hoist operator needs to lower the hand chain. This turns the gear and axle passing through the lifting mechanism. Inside the lifting mechanism, there are multiple gears that increase the mechanical work applied when the hand chain is pulled dozens of times using the gear chain.

Therefore, when the hand chain is pulled, the gear turned by the hand chain rotates the drive shaft and the gear chain that turns the load chain sprocket. This also rotates the load chain sprocket that wraps around the load chain and lifts the load. Larger gears move more slowly than smaller gears but create more force. Therefore, it lifts the load very slowly compared to a hydraulic hoist. At the end of the lifting chain, there is a holding hook for easy attachment and removal of a load. Also, most hoists have a latch or brake system that prevents the load from sliding back but allows lowering a load by pulling the other side of the hand chain.
