Cobalt-based electrodes have the highest hardness among all. They are used in hardfacing welding of high-alloy steels, hot work steels, self-hardening steels, high manganese steels, and nickel alloys.

The obtained filler metal contains a high percentage of "Co" (cobalt) and shows excellent resistance against thermal shocks up to 800°C, corrosion, oxidation, pressure, and metal-to-metal friction. The filler metal maintains its hardness even at high working temperatures and exhibits high resistance to cavitation wear.

– 53 – 56 HRC (+20°C)
– 42 – 46 HRC (+600°C)

– Hot cutting blades and tools
– Pump shafts operating at high temperatures
– Plastic extrusion screws
– Surface welding of rails and rollers operating at high temperatures

– Protective armored filler in faucet gasket beds
– Filling of sliding bearing surfaces
– Paper and cardboard cutting blades

Before the welding process on thick sections, a preheating of 300–400°C should be applied. The temperature between passes must be controlled, and a slow cooling should be ensured after welding. In applications on some Cr-Ni steels requiring underlay, Kobatek 382, Kobatek 352, or ASP-310R electrodes should be used for padding.

A clear structure cannot be achieved with Kobatek 540. In cases where a balanced appearance is necessary due to thickness, after the first passes with Kobatek 541 or 543, the cover pass can be done with Kobatek 540.
