How Does a Screw Compressor Work

Screw compressors are typically used for low-pressure applications up to 8 bar. The rotating screw elements include a casing, an air filter, rubber seals, suction, and discharge valves. One shaft is driven by a motor, and the other drives the shaft. The drive shaft is connected to the driven shaft with timing gears that help match the speeds of both shafts. The drive shaft generally operates with an electric motor. The two shafts are enclosed in an airtight casing. The suction valve is opened first to allow air intake. Then, the motor that drives the shaft is started. Thus, the driven shaft begins to rotate from the driver shaft due to the timing gears. Air enters the gap between the two screws as they rotate in opposite directions, getting compressed in the groove between the two screws. The gap between the two screws gradually decreases from the intake end to the discharge end, causing the air to compress.

Moreover, due to the screw movement, the compressed air moves from the intake end to the discharge end. When the compressed air reaches the discharge end, it passes from the discharge valve to the storage tank. Additionally, during the compression process, cold water flows continuously around the housing that exchanges heat with the hot compressed air. The reason behind this is that the efficiency of any compression process is highest when carried out isothermal compared to adiabatic or polytropic. Therefore, to maintain the temperature of the air during compression, the developed heat is continuously exchanged with the flowing water. A graph can help you understand this logic more clearly.
